We’re here because we want action on the climate emergency, we want a democracy where our elected representatives acutally represent us as a community, rather than industry lobby groups with lots of money.
To achieve that, we can no longer avoid it: we all need to get more engaged in politics. It is in politics that our climate future is decided.
At the federal level, neither the Labor Government nor the Coalition seem to get it. The majority of Australians – around 85-90 per cent of us – want to see stronger action on climate change. However, Labor continues to open up new gas and coal projects, even at the 12 Apostles, and they want us to continue burning gas even beyond 2050.
Meanwhile, the Coalition has announced that if elected, they will abandon Australia’s current 2030 emissions target.
As a climate-conscious voter, this means that at election time, the Greens are your only option, unless you are fortunate enough to live in an electorate where you can vote for a climate-action-focused micro-party.
This may change at the next election, which is coming up within the next year. A new movement of Community Independents is emerging, and with the seven independents already in Parliament, it is proving to be a very exciting development for anyone disillusioned with the current state of Australian politics. These independents are already making a difference, speaking truth to power and showing both integrity and courage.
With Voices of Corangamite and Voices of Corio, the Community Independents movement is now coming to the Geelong region.
Voices of Geelong is a thinktank established to coordinate and support the two campaigns whereever it is relevant and needed.
Our group was formed on the basis of a talk that Sue Barrett from Voices of Goldstein gave at the Geelong West Town Hall in May 2024. Within the first month, we were already more than 20 people. We have regular Zoom-meetings and also plan to have monthly in-person meeting.
Stay tuned for more information on this page as the groups evolve.
Let us know if you are interested in joining the exciting political project.
